Up On the Housetop Gingerbread house
Inspiration comes from many places, especially when it comes to my gingerbread houses over the years. This gingerbread house was inspired by a pie crust cutter set I found at Williams Sonoma, my absolute favorite store! I was so excited to find the set, complete with Santa and reindeer, and I just knew I had to make this house.
Believe it or not, I had been dreaming of a set like this. It’s hard to find cutters that would be just the right size to fit on top of a gingerbread house, so finding this perfectly sized pie crust cutter set was like hitting the jackpot!
Santa and his sleigh are covered in red and white gum paste with silver dragees for accents. The gum paste is attached to the gingerbread with royal icing.
The boughs decorating the door and tiny wreaths on the windows are gum paste.
Here are a few shots of the making of this gingerbread house. I use these tiny embroidery scissors to texture the gum paste greenery and wreaths.
The icicles are royal icing and the chevron roof pattern is created using a stencil.
I like how the silver dragees on the reindeer collars look like little jingle bells. The red gum paste bows add the perfect finishing touch to the arched windows, and I can almost hear the crunch of snow underfoot when I look at the mounds of swirling royal icing snow.
The red doorstep is so inviting. Originally I tried another color, but realized it had to be red!
I hope this gingerbread house gets you singing one of my Christmas favorites –
“Up on the house top the reindeer pause. Out jumps good ole Santa Claus. Down through the chimney, with lots of toys. All for the little ones’ Christmas Joys!”
