Gingerbread

Candy Cabin Gingerbread House

This gingerbread house is all colors and cuteness. I thought I would go with a bright cheerful color scheme instead of sticking to traditional Christmas colors. The house is made of gingerbread and covered in fondant and gum paste.

The stick posts, supporting the front door overhang, and the logs stacked outside of the window are made from Pocky (the little stick candy that is covered in chocolate). There are a ton of varieties of Pocky, and this particular variety has little knobs all over it.

The windows on this house are sheets of lasagna. I use Trader Joe’s lasagna because it is super flat and easy to cut with an X-acto knife. It also has a nice warm glow once it is lit up.

Here are a few photos of the making of this gingerbread house. As usual, I am working at night, so apologies for the poor photo quality. The house is gingerbread and window are fixed in place with royal icing. The hole in the bottom (far right photo) is for the light.

This house is inspired by the Bavarian Christmas markets where you see traditional gingerbread hearts hanging by the dozens from strings all around the shops. If you haven’t been to Bavaria, just google “Bavarian Christmas Market” to see what I’m talking about. These markets are amazing and filled with the most whimsical, wonderful treats.

When I was in Germany, the buttered pretzels were my favorite. I’ve never had anything comparable over here, but I love pretzels of all kinds. The gingerbread men on this house are from a sprinkle mix that I found. Its always nice when you find something premade that fits in just right.

Here are the lights that I use to light up my gingerbread houses. The base of this gingerbread house is a regular cake drum that I carved a hole in and a groove for the cord to fit into so that the base can sit flat, even when lit up.

This shot gives you a good view of the iridescent shimmer added by brushing Super Pearl Luster Dust on the fondant.

The candies, chocolate bars, hearts, stars, orange slices, and pretzel decorations are all gumpaste.

Here are a few shots with the light inside of the house turned off.

The roof tiles are made of gumpaste and snow drifts are royal icing.

A simple gum paste deer snuggled in the snow sits outside the front door.

I hope you enjoyed this sweet Candy Cabin Gingerbread House, and I hope you get a chance to visit the Bavarian Christmas markets one day, and experience all of the delightful treats!

XO~Sarah
