Black Forest Gingerbread house
This gingerbread house was inspired by a train ride through the Black Forest region of Germany. I remember the view from our train car vividly. There were so many lovely deer prancing through what appeared to be a magical forest. My husband thinks it looks like it came from a Wes Anderson movie, and that’s a compliment because all of his favorite movies are Wes Anderson.
Here is a side view of the house. You can see that there are three colors of royal icing being used here. The green is peeking out on the corner of the balcony, the red icing is holding the red overhang above the door, and the white icing is keeping the house together. You can see a bit of it where the two walls come together. Using all of these different colors is critical to keeping the house “clean” looking.
The colors of the house itself are simple, red, green, white, and brown. Since this house is made of sugar cookie dough, it really isn’t truly a gingerbread house in the strictest sense. I have a much looser definition of gingerbread house; I consider any house that I make for Christmas to be a gingerbread house as long as it is edible.
The red balls on the wreath are coated in red disco dust to get that sparkle. The snow on the rooftop is sprinkled with white disco dust as well.
The trees are very stylized and simple, but I feel like they compliment the feel of the house.
The window frames are made of brown gum paste, and in this shot you can really see the texture of the sugar cookie on the roof. I tinted the sugar cookie dough red for the roof and green for the balcony, trees, and trim under the eaves.
Here is a shot of the inside of this house. The gelatin leaf windows are affixed with royal icing.
Here are the windows made of brown gum paste.
This sweet sugar cookie fawn is dotted with royal icing and I used an edible marker to draw on the eye and nose.
I like the snow just hanging onto the edges of this red roof.
Happy Holidays Everyone!
